Because of the high spectral resolution and low noise of the instrument, SUMER has detected faint lines not previously observed, and determined their spectral profiles.
Also a new view of many aspects of the Sun has been obtained including quiet Sun (over a million K), chromospheric and transition region network, coronal hole, polar plume, prominence and active region studies.
In general, all the coronal instruments on SOHO have clearly demonstrated that the upper solar atmosphere is much more dynamical than expected.
